Virgil Stonestreet

VIRGIL STONESTREET

Virgil H. "Stony" Stonestreet, the son of Letcher Shelton and Anna Susan (Carroll) Stonestreet, was born in Braxton County, West Virginia on June 26, 1912 and died in Hastings, Nebraska on August 26, 2002, at the age of 90.

He grew up and was educated on Triplett, in Braxton County, West Virginia.

Virgil married Effie White in 1932. Virgil was a rural mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service. Later he worked for Goodyear Rubber Company in Akron, Ohio building airplane tires. Virgil then went to work for Mason & Hanger - Silas Mason Company in 1946 in Ravenna, Ohio. He was transferred to the Grand Island plant in June of 1950.

Virgil was united in marriage to Elsie Rasmussen at Messiah Lutheran Church in Grand Island on September 9, 1953. Virgil retired from Mason & Hangar - Silas Mason Company in 1976 after 30 years of service. He farmed in the Cairo vicinity from 1954 to 1967. They moved to Hamilton County in 1967 and farmed near Marquette until 1976. They moved to an acreage near Aurora in 1976. Virgil worked for Riverside Golf Course for 25 years until the fall of 2001.

Virgil was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Marquette, where he was treasurer of St. John's Church Council for six years. He served on the school board for rural schools near Cairo. Virgil also volunteered his time doing landscaping in the local community.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a son Morris and a brother Russell.

Those left to cherish his memories are his wife Elsie of Aurora; two sons, Homer Stonestreet of Warren, Ohio and Bradley Stonestreet and his wife Jenni of Leavenworth, Kansas; 3 daughters, Barbara King and her husband Bobby of Dover, Tennessee, Vicky Sellon and her husband Jeff of Englewood, Colorado and Sheila Bluford and her husband Robert of Lincoln; 15 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great grandchildren. Virgil is also survived by one brother, Earl Stonestreet of Rootstown, Ohio and 7 sisters, Hazel Faust of Needles, California, Susie Kuhn of Gaithersburg, Maryland, Opal Smith of Gassaway, West Virginia, Gladys Metz of Fairmont, West Virginia, Glenda Lemon of Smithville, West Virginia, Alma Boles of Ravenna, Ohio and Joan Lassiter of Canoga Park, California.
